Windows 11 May 2026 Patch Tuesday Fixes 120 Vulnerabilities, Adds Xbox Mode and Haptic Feedback
Microsoft's May 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 fix 120 vulnerabilities and introduce new features including Xbox mode, haptic feedback support, and expanded archive format support in File Explorer.
Microsoft released Windows 11 cumulative updates KB5089549 (for versions 25H2 and 24H2) and KB5087420 (for version 23H2) on May 12, 2026, as part of the May 2026 Patch Tuesday cycle. The updates are mandatory and address 120 security vulnerabilities discovered in previous months, alongside a range of bug fixes and new features.
The updates bring build numbers to 26200.8457 (25H2), 26100.8457 (24H2), and 22631.7079 (23H2). Users can install the updates via Windows Update or download them manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Among the most notable new features is Xbox mode, which provides an Xbox console-like experience directly on the desktop. Microsoft also added haptic feedback support for compatible input devices, including the Surface Slim Pen 2, ASUS Pen 3.0, and MSI Pen 2, with future support planned for mice such as the Logitech MX Master 4. Users can enable or disable haptic signals in Settings under Bluetooth & devices.
File Explorer receives several improvements, including expanded support for archive formats such as uu, cpio, xar, and NuGet Packages (nupkg). The update also preserves View and Sort preferences in folders like Downloads and Documents when apps launch File Explorer directly to those locations, and removes a white flash that could appear in dark mode.
Security enhancements include a new secure processing mode for batch files and Command Prompt scripts, allowing administrators to prevent batch files from changing during execution. This can be enabled via a registry key or through Application Control for Business policy. The update also improves Windows Hello reliability, fixes issues with the taskbar system tray loading, and enhances third-party driver compatibility with midisrv.exe.
Other improvements include a redesigned voice typing interface on the touch keyboard, a new Arabic 101 Legacy keyboard layout, and a renamed Drop Tray feature (formerly Drag Tray) with a smaller peek view to prevent unintentional openings. The update also increases the FAT32 volume formatting size limit from 32GB to 2TB via the command line, and improves memory usage for Delivery Optimization.
This is the fifth Patch Tuesday release of 2026, and Microsoft continues to base updates on the 24H2 platform, meaning 25H2 receives the same fixes. Users are strongly encouraged to install the updates promptly to protect against the 120 patched vulnerabilities.
