Visa Enhances A2A Protect with AI-Powered Fraud Score to Combat Growing Account-to-Account Payment Fraud
Visa has upgraded its A2A Protect solution with a unified fraud score, integrating Featurespace technology to detect and prevent account-to-account payment fraud in real-time.

Visa has announced a significant enhancement to its A2A Protect solution, designed to combat the escalating threat of account-to-account (A2A) payment fraud. The updated system now provides financial institutions with real-time risk insights, enabling them to identify and stop fraudulent transactions before funds are transferred out of customer accounts. This advancement aims to significantly reduce the incidence of financial crime in the rapidly growing A2A payment landscape.
The core of this enhancement is the introduction of a new unified fraud score. This score is the result of Visa's integration of advanced technology from Featurespace, a leader in adaptive financial crime management. By combining Visa's extensive network expertise with Featurespace's AI capabilities, the new score offers financial institutions faster and clearer signals to detect a wider range of fraudulent activities while simultaneously minimizing the number of false positives that can disrupt legitimate customer transactions.
This upgrade comes at a critical time as account-to-account payments are experiencing exponential growth worldwide. Projections indicate that A2A transactions will surpass 5.8 trillion by 2028, representing a substantial 160% increase from 2024. This surge in volume presents new opportunities for fraudsters, making robust and rapid detection mechanisms essential for financial institutions.
A2A Protect leverages sophisticated artificial intelligence and transfer learning techniques. A key benefit is that it provides banks with immediate access to critical global risk insights pertaining to A2A transactions. Unlike traditional methods that might require months for models to develop intelligence from a bank's own data or for consortiums to form, A2A Protect delivers value from day one, offering immediate protection against emerging threats.
Financial institutions that opt into the program can further enhance their defenses by incorporating additional network-level signals. These signals provide deeper insights into emerging threats that operate across the broader financial ecosystem, offering a more comprehensive view of risk. This collaborative approach helps the entire ecosystem respond more effectively to new and evolving fraudulent schemes.
James Mirfin, Head of Risk and Security Solutions at Visa, emphasized the need for speed in fraud detection. "Fraudsters move fast across payment types, and financial institutions need risk insights just as quickly, without slowing down legitimate payments," he stated. "A2A Protect combines Visa’s network expertise with Featurespace’s technology to deliver a powerful new layer of protection that helps financial institutions detect more fraud, earlier."
Visa A2A Protect has demonstrated impressive results in trials, reportedly increasing fraud detection rates by an average of 75% within the first six months of deployment. The solution is designed for seamless integration into existing banking systems via a single API, minimizing implementation time and complexity. Each alert generated includes a plain-language explanation, empowering fraud teams to act swiftly and confidently without causing undue disruption to genuine customers.
