Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich), one of Germany's largest universities with over 52,000 students, is currently investigating a significant cyberattack that compromised an IT system containing sensitive student enrollment data. The university confirmed that an unauthorized individual accessed the system, and there is a strong possibility that personal financial and health-related information may have been exposed.
The university stated that the compromised data includes students' names, dates of birth, contact details, and LMU email addresses. More critically, the breach may have also exposed bank account information, health insurance numbers, and identifiers related to Germany's student financial aid program. In some instances, the exposed records could even include details about the reasons students requested leaves of absence. LMU Munich has emphasized that examination records, specific course content, and academic performance data were not affected by the incident.
