UK Launches £7.8 Billion Space Strategy to Bolster National Security and Economic Growth
Britain has unveiled a comprehensive new space strategy backed by £7.8 billion in funding, aiming to enhance national security, drive economic growth, and secure its position in the evolving global space domain through 2030.

The United Kingdom has officially launched its ambitious new space strategy, committing a substantial £7.8 billion in cross-departmental funding to bolster national security and foster economic growth by 2030. This significant investment aims to consolidate the UK's position in space by enhancing capabilities in critical areas such as orbital collision warnings, military intelligence, satellite communications, and space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
The strategy represents a unified governmental approach, bringing together efforts from various departments including the newly formed Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST), the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Department for Transport, UK Research and Innovation, and the Met Office. The government highlighted the domestic space sector's current value of £18.6 billion and its support for over 55,000 skilled jobs, emphasizing the economic opportunities inherent in space.
BIST Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that space is increasingly becoming a frontier for both economic and military competition. "This plan will help keep Britain secure by strengthening our ability to launch satellites, detect threats and protect the services people rely on every day," Reynolds said. "At the same time, this plan will enable our excellent UK industry to seize the boundless opportunities of this new age in space, creating skilled jobs, driving growth and improving connectivity for all of us."
A significant portion of the funding, £149 million for European Space Agency (ESA) space safety initiatives like the Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre, is earmarked for strengthening space domain awareness. This includes improved tracking and analysis of satellites, rockets, and orbital debris, crucial for providing timely warnings of potential satellite collisions, hostile activities, and solar storms that could impact vital services.
The strategy also allocates £880 million towards enhancing space control and ISR capabilities. This investment is designed to bolster the UK's ability to monitor military activities, identify threats to satellites, and safeguard national assets in orbit. Furthermore, £2.8 billion is dedicated to satellite connectivity, supporting programs like Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) and the military's SKYNET communications system, with up to £160 million specifically for C-LEO research and development.
Additional funding includes £40 million for in-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing technologies, potentially enabling satellite repairs, debris removal, and even space-based production of goods. European rocket programs will receive £148 million, and SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland is slated for £30 million in funding, pending due diligence. Research and exploration missions, including the Rosalind Franklin Mars rover, will benefit from £163 million.
This new strategy replaces the UK's 2021 National Space Strategy, which a previous House of Lords report criticized for failing to translate ambitions into tangible results. The government also aims to streamline procurement and development of space technology, starting with satellite communications, to favor domestic suppliers and improve delivery efficiency. This comes amidst concerns raised about the progress of the £8.35 billion Skynet 6 program, which has faced delays and workforce shortages.
The comprehensive plan underscores the UK's commitment to leveraging space for national security and economic prosperity, addressing challenges from orbital debris to the growing militarization of space, and aiming to foster a robust domestic space industry capable of competing on the global stage.
