Thales Sentinel Envelope Plus Hardens Software Against AI-Powered Attacks
Thales introduces Sentinel Envelope Plus, a solution that fortifies compiled applications against AI-driven reverse engineering and vulnerability discovery without source code modification.

Thales has announced Sentinel Envelope Plus, a new addition to its Sentinel Envelope software protection solution designed to significantly harden compiled applications against AI-assisted reverse engineering, automated zero-day vulnerability discovery, and automated exploit generation. This innovative tool applies multiple layers of protection to software applications without requiring source code changes or any specialized compilation environments, addressing the escalating threat posed by AI in cybersecurity.
The increasing sophistication and accessibility of AI-assisted tools are dramatically reducing the time and expertise needed for reverse engineering software. This trend poses new risks for software vendors, particularly for applications deployed on-premises, embedded systems, or edge devices where attackers can obtain a copy of the application and analyze it offline. Such offline analysis provides attackers with ample opportunity to uncover vulnerabilities, proprietary algorithms, and sensitive business logic, potentially leading to data breaches, intellectual property theft, operational disruption, and reputational damage.
"AI is dramatically reducing the time and expertise needed to analyze software for vulnerabilities," stated Damien Bullot, Vice President of Software Monetization at Thales. "Our testing shows that the right software protection can make AI-assisted reverse engineering significantly more difficult and resource-intensive. For software vendors, that additional time matters. It creates a larger window to identify issues, deploy fixes, and protect customers, while helping safeguard the intellectual property embedded in their applications."
Thales conducted a controlled test to measure the effectiveness of Sentinel Envelope Plus against AI-assisted analysis. An AI agent tasked with analyzing an unprotected application identified 8 out of 10 vulnerabilities. However, when presented with the same application protected by Sentinel Envelope Plus, the agent failed to identify any vulnerabilities, despite consuming 970 times more computational resources and employing increasingly sophisticated techniques, including the generation of custom analysis tools. Ultimately, the agent recommended discontinuing the analysis due to the lack of exposed vulnerabilities.
While Sentinel Envelope Plus does not remove vulnerabilities from the code, it makes them substantially harder to discover and exploit. This increased difficulty provides organizations with a critical window to detect and remediate issues, allowing development teams to address security flaws within their planned release cycles rather than halting work. This approach helps protect both product roadmaps and customer trust.
The new solution builds upon Thales' existing Sentinel Envelope capabilities, enabling developers to apply advanced protection to specific, security-sensitive portions of an application. This selective application of protection can be done without altering the application's source code or requiring a specialized development environment. Sentinel Envelope Plus transforms and recompiles these selected parts, embedding multiple layers of defense against decompilation, tampering, and runtime inspection.
Developers have the flexibility to choose which parts of their application receive the strongest protection, allowing them to strike a balance between robust security and optimal performance. Furthermore, Sentinel Envelope Plus can integrate software protection with optional licensing capabilities. This dual functionality helps vendors safeguard their proprietary algorithms and business logic while simultaneously protecting the license controls that underpin their commercial models. Crucially, these licensing controls can be implemented without any modifications to the source code, streamlining the integration process.
