SonicWall GMS Virtual Appliance Vulnerable to Local Privilege Escalation
A local privilege escalation vulnerability in SonicWall's GMS Virtual Appliance allows attackers with initial code execution to gain root privileges.

Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) has disclosed a critical local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting SonicWall's Global Management System (GMS) Virtual Appliance. The flaw, assigned the identifier ZDI-26-531 and tracked as CVE-2026-66148, carries a CVSS score of 7.8, indicating a high severity.
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first possess the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target GMS Virtual Appliance. Once this initial access is achieved, the attacker can then leverage the vulnerability to elevate their privileges to that of a root user. This would grant them complete control over the affected system.
The vulnerability stems from an issue in how the appliance handles its interface command. Specifically, the system fails to properly validate user-supplied input before using it in a system call.
