Siemens Industrial Edge App Publisher Vulnerable to RCE via Certificate Validation and XSS Flaws
Siemens Industrial Edge App Publisher versions prior to 1.27.9 contain a critical vulnerability chain that can lead to remote code execution.
Siemens has issued a security advisory detailing a critical vulnerability chain affecting its Industrial Edge App Publisher software. Versions prior to 1.27.9 are susceptible to attacks that could allow an unauthenticated attacker on the network to achieve remote code execution (RCE) on the local machine.
The vulnerability chain is composed of two distinct flaws: improper certificate validation (CVE-2026-78556) and improper data rendering, which can lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) when combined with Node.js integration (CVE-2026-78557).
The first vulnerability, CVE-2026-78556, stems from the software's failure to properly validate server certificates during TLS connections. This weakness enables a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, where an attacker can intercept and relay communication, effectively impersonating a trusted entity between the client and the intended server.
This MITM capability can then be leveraged in conjunction with CVE-2026-78557. This second vulnerability arises from the application's inability to properly sanitize or escape data received from backend responses before rendering it in the user interface. Because the front end is integrated with Node.js, this flaw allows for the execution of arbitrary JavaScript.
By chaining these two vulnerabilities, an attacker can impersonate the management server and execute arbitrary code on the local machine. The CVSS scores highlight the severity, with CVE-2026-78556 rated as HIGH (7.4) and CVE-2026-78557 also rated as HIGH (8.3), indicating a significant risk to affected systems.
Siemens has addressed these issues by releasing an update to the Industrial Edge App Publisher. The company strongly recommends that users update to version 1.27.9 or later to mitigate these risks. The affected product is deployed worldwide across critical infrastructure sectors including Critical Manufacturing, Transportation Systems, Energy, Healthcare and Public Health, Financial Services, and Government Services and Facilities.
CISA advises organizations to minimize network exposure for all control system devices, ensuring they are not accessible from the internet and are isolated behind firewalls. When remote access is necessary, secure methods like VPNs should be employed, ensuring they are kept up-to-date. Organizations are encouraged to perform thorough impact and risk assessments before implementing any defensive measures.
This advisory underscores the ongoing security challenges within industrial control systems and the importance of timely patching and robust network security practices to protect critical infrastructure from sophisticated cyber threats.
