Proton Launches Lumo 2.0, Enhancing AI Assistant with Zero-Access Encryption and Multimodal Capabilities
Proton has upgraded its AI assistant, Lumo 2.0, introducing advanced multimodal features, memory functions, and enhanced web search, all while maintaining its core zero-access encryption for user privacy.
Proton has announced the release of Lumo 2.0, a significant evolution of its AI assistant that emphasizes privacy through zero-access encryption. This latest version is built on a new architecture and aims to bring its capabilities closer to frontier AI models, incorporating new AI models, multimodal functionalities, a memory feature, and an improved web search. The update also introduces features tailored for enterprise use.
Lumo 2.0 is available in several tiers. The free plan offers access to Lumo's core features. Subscribers to Lumo Plus gain benefits such as unlimited chats, access to Projects, advanced image generation capabilities, and priority access to the fastest AI models. For organizations, Lumo Professional provides secure collaboration tools and centralized team management, ensuring privacy and control within a business context.
Eamonn Maguire, Director of Engineering, ML & AI at Proton, highlighted the substantial performance gains, stating, "Lumo 2.0 is our biggest leap in capability yet." He noted that Lumo 2.0 Lite scores 127% higher than Lumo 1.4 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, an independent benchmark that assesses AI models across various tasks including agents, coding, scientific reasoning, and general knowledge. The Lumo 2.0 Max version achieved an even more impressive 240% increase in performance.
The assistant offers different modes to suit various user needs. Lumo 2.0 Lite is designed for everyday tasks like general queries, writing assistance, and summarization. Lumo 2.0 Max provides more robust reasoning and contextual understanding, making it suitable for complex or demanding tasks. Furthermore, users can select between 'Fast mode' for quick responses to straightforward queries and 'Thinking mode' for detailed, multi-step analysis of complex problems. Proton reports that everyday queries are processed up to 76% faster than with Lumo 1.4, while complex requests now include a visible 'thinking state' to show the AI's reasoning process.
Key new features include user-controlled Memory and Projects, which facilitate ongoing collaboration and context retention across multiple conversations. Memory allows the assistant to retain user preferences and conversation history, with users having full control over what is remembered or deleted. The context window has been doubled, enabling longer conversations and the processing of larger documents. Projects enable users to organize related chats, files, and instructions within encrypted workspaces. Additionally, Custom Lumos allow users to create personalized AI assistants for specific tasks, complete with custom instructions and reference files.
Lumo 2.0 introduces significant multimodal capabilities, allowing the assistant to analyze uploaded images, documents, charts, and screenshots. It can also edit existing images and generate new visuals from text prompts or sketches within the same conversation. The web search functionality has been upgraded to provide live information with source citations, covering recent events, financial data, and weather updates.
For business users, Lumo for Business offers centralized administration and privacy-focused safeguards. Proton emphasizes that all conversations are protected by zero-access encryption, are never logged, and are not used to train AI models. The data remains within Proton's European infrastructure, and administrative controls allow organizations to manage team access effectively.
