Portnox Enhances Endpoint Security with Autonomous AI Application Detection and Control
Portnox introduces new capabilities to detect, restrict, and remove unauthorized AI applications acting as autonomous agents on managed devices, addressing the growing 'shadow AI' risk.

Portnox has unveiled a significant enhancement to its security platform, enabling the detection and automatic enforcement of policies against unauthorized AI applications operating on managed devices. This new functionality aims to combat the proliferation of "shadow AI" – generative AI tools that function as autonomous agents, capable of accessing sensitive local files and enterprise data with the same permissions as the logged-in user.
The growing adoption of AI tools by employees, often without IT department oversight, presents a substantial visibility and control gap for organizations. Portnox's solution addresses this by providing IT and security teams with the necessary tools to define acceptable AI applications, prohibit risky ones, and automatically assess device risk based on installed software. The platform can identify a wide range of leading generative AI applications, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and numerous others, with continuous updates to cover emerging tools.
When a device is found to be non-compliant with defined policies, Portnox can automatically trigger enforcement actions. These actions can range from blocking the device from network access, restricting its ability to connect to specific resources, to completely removing the offending AI application. This automated response mechanism operates on both macOS and Windows operating systems, ensuring consistent policy enforcement across diverse endpoints.
"AI is simply moving too quickly for security teams to manage it through visibility alone," stated Denny LeCompte, CEO of Portnox. "Organizations need to know which AI tools are inside their environment and set policies about which ones they trust and enforce those decisions automatically in real time. As AI becomes more autonomous, control over access becomes every bit as important as the technology itself."
This new capability extends Portnox's existing posture detection and access control framework to encompass this new class of applications. By integrating shadow AI management into existing security workflows, IT teams can apply the same policy-based controls they use for other software, streamlining security management and reducing the burden on security personnel.
The detection of unauthorized applications is only effective when coupled with decisive action. Portnox's automated enforcement ensures that policy violations are addressed immediately, without manual intervention. This real-time response is crucial for mitigating the potential data access risks posed by autonomous AI agents.
This feature builds upon Portnox's prior AI agent security capabilities, which offer a network-level "kill switch" to immediately revoke access for risky AI agents. The combined functionalities provide a comprehensive approach to AI risk management, addressing both the control of unapproved applications on endpoints and the continuous monitoring and restriction of active AI agents within the environment.
As AI technologies continue to evolve and become more deeply integrated into enterprise operations, maintaining control over their deployment and access is paramount. Portnox's latest offering equips organizations with the visibility, policy definition, and automated enforcement necessary to navigate the rapidly changing AI landscape securely.
