Microsoft Windows Compatibility Appraiser Vulnerability Allows Local Privilege Escalation
A local privilege escalation vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Compatibility Appraiser, ZDI-26-606, allows attackers with low-privilege code execution to gain SYSTEM privileges.

A newly disclosed vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, identified as ZDI-26-606, presents a local privilege escalation risk for affected systems. The flaw resides within the Windows Compatibility Appraiser component, a scheduled task responsible for evaluating application compatibility.
Exploitation of this vulnerability requires an attacker to first achieve low-privileged code execution on the target system, typically within the context of the LOCAL SERVICE account. Once this initial foothold is established, the attacker can then leverage a specific weakness in the Compatibility Appraiser's handling of symbolic links. By carefully crafting and placing a symbolic link, an attacker can manipulate the service to delete arbitrary files on the system.
This ability to delete files, even if seemingly innocuous, can be chained to achieve a much more significant outcome: privilege escalation to the SYSTEM account. The SYSTEM account possesses the highest level of privileges on a Windows machine, granting it unrestricted access to all files, processes, and system configurations. With SYSTEM privileges, an attacker can effectively take complete control of the compromised machine.
Following a successful privilege escalation, an attacker can then proceed to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level permissions.
