Microsoft Windows 11 Copilot Gains 'PC Insights' for AI-Powered System Diagnostics

Microsoft is developing a new artificial intelligence feature for its Windows 11 Copilot assistant, codenamed "PC Insights," designed to offer users detailed diagnostics on their system's performance. This capability aims to move beyond generic troubleshooting advice by providing real-time analysis of hardware components and resource utilization.

The PC Insights feature, currently in a slow rollout phase within the United States, allows Copilot to access Windows APIs to monitor key system metrics. These include the current usage of the CPU, RAM, and GPU, as well as the available and total storage capacity. Users can engage with Copilot conversationally, asking questions about their PC's health and resource consumption.

Beyond core processing and memory, PC Insights can also assess storage management by breaking down folder sizes in common locations like Downloads and Documents. While it can determine if there's enough free space for new applications or games, it refrains from accessing individual file contents unless explicit user permission is granted. The feature also extends to monitoring connected peripherals such as USB devices, external drives, printers, and webcams, reporting on their operational status.

On the connectivity front, PC Insights can report on the status of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. It also provides insights into battery health, the current status of antivirus software, and can retrieve detailed system specifications and BIOS information. This comprehensive data collection aims to equip users with actionable information to understand and address performance issues.

The primary benefit of PC Insights lies in its conversational troubleshooting capabilities. Instead of manually navigating complex tools like Task Manager or Resource Monitor, users can simply ask Copilot why their system feels sluggish. The AI can then provide a contextualized answer based on the live data it has gathered, enabling more direct and efficient problem-solving.

This initiative aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to enhance the perceived speed and responsiveness of Windows 11. However, the rollout of PC Insights presents a potential contradiction. Copilot itself is known to be a resource-intensive application, often consuming significant amounts of RAM due to its embedded Microsoft Edge web app. This raises concerns that the tool designed to diagnose system slowdowns might itself contribute to them.

Microsoft appears to be balancing the introduction of useful AI-driven diagnostic tools with the ongoing challenge of managing Copilot's resource footprint. As PC Insights is still under development and not yet widely available, its final feature set, resource requirements, and eventual rollout timeline may be subject to change based on user feedback and further internal testing.
