Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Editions
Microsoft will end support for Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, version 24H2, on October 13, 2026, leaving millions of devices vulnerable to security threats.

Microsoft has issued a 60-day warning that Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, version 24H2, will reach their end-of-support date on October 13, 2026. After this critical deadline, devices running this specific version will no longer receive essential monthly security updates or non-security preview releases from Microsoft. This cessation of updates significantly increases the vulnerability of these systems to newly discovered exploits, malware, and other cyber threats.
The end-of-support notice applies to Windows 11 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations deployments that are currently on version 24H2. This feature update was initially released on October 1, 2024, providing the standard 24-month servicing window for consumer and business-focused editions under Microsoft's established Windows servicing model. For cybersecurity professionals, this deadline represents a crucial juncture, as the monthly cumulative updates are vital for patching vulnerabilities that could lead to remote code execution, privilege escalation, information disclosure, security feature bypasses, and denial-of-service attacks.
While systems running an unsupported version of Windows 11 can continue to operate, they will lack protection against emerging threats. To mitigate this risk, Microsoft strongly recommends that all eligible Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro devices be upgraded to Windows 11 version 25H2. This newer release is supported until October 12, 2027, offering an additional year of crucial security and quality updates. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 25H2 has been generally available since September 30, 2025.
It is important for IT administrators to note the distinction between different Windows 11 editions and versions. While Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions face the October 2026 deadline, the Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11 24H2 will continue to be supported until October 12, 2027, benefiting from the longer 36-month servicing period. This difference necessitates accurate device inventory management to prioritize upgrade efforts effectively. Administrators can identify affected endpoints by checking the Windows version and OS build, which for 24H2 falls under the 26100 build family, while 25H2 uses the 26200 build family.
Organizations planning their upgrade strategies should incorporate thorough compatibility testing for critical business applications, device drivers, endpoint detection and response (EDR) agents, VPN clients, disk encryption tools, and any internally developed software. Furthermore, security teams must ensure that their update management policies, including Windows Update for Business configurations or Intune deployment settings, are correctly configured to facilitate the deployment of the 25H2 feature update and do not inadvertently block it.
Microsoft's reminder also extends to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, which is scheduled to reach its end of extended support on the same date, October 13, 2026. For these systems, Microsoft advises migration to the latest Long-Term Servicing Channel release, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. While Extended Security Updates (ESU) are available for organizations requiring more time, these should be viewed as a temporary risk mitigation strategy rather than a long-term solution.
With only two months remaining until the deadline, cybersecurity teams must treat unsupported Windows versions as an immediate and growing exposure. Completing the necessary upgrades before October 13, 2026, is paramount for organizations to maintain consistent patch coverage and significantly reduce the risk of threat actors exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities in their environments.
