Microsoft Addresses Widespread WSUS Synchronization Delays
Microsoft is actively working to resolve synchronization issues impacting Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers, which have prevented timely deployment of critical updates for over a week.

Microsoft has confirmed and is actively addressing a persistent issue causing significant synchronization delays and timeouts for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers. The problem, which began impacting organizations more than a week ago, hinders the ability of WSUS servers to connect with Microsoft Update servers, thereby disrupting the deployment of essential security and feature updates.
WSUS, a cornerstone of enterprise patch management for nearly two decades, allows IT administrators to centrally manage and deploy Microsoft product updates across their networks. Typically, WSUS servers synchronize with Microsoft Update servers daily to download the latest metadata for available patches. However, the current issue breaks this critical process, leaving organizations unable to distribute the most recent Windows updates through WSUS or Microsoft's Configuration Manager.
According to Microsoft's Windows health dashboard, the synchronization problems affect both client operating systems, including Windows 10 version 1607 and later, and server platforms such as Windows Server 2012 and later. The company noted that the impact became more pronounced starting around July 13, 2026, with many organizations experiencing extended synchronization times or outright timeouts.
Microsoft has implemented some mitigation measures, rolling out fixes on Saturday that are intended to prevent newly installed or rebuilt WSUS servers from encountering these synchronization issues. While these measures have restored normal functionality for new deployments, the company is still developing and deploying additional mitigations for WSUS servers that were already affected by the problem.
"For WSUS servers that were previously affected, Microsoft is working on mitigation steps to help customers safely remove the affected metadata from their environments," the company stated. This indicates a multi-pronged approach, addressing both new installations and remediating existing impacted systems.
This is not the first time WSUS has faced synchronization challenges. In May of last year, Microsoft resolved a similar issue that plagued enterprise customers attempting to update Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 systems. Prior to that, in July 2025, another problem prevented organizations from syncing with Microsoft Update, and in August 2025, a separate issue blocked the delivery of monthly security updates via WSUS.
The recurring nature of these WSUS synchronization problems highlights the complexity of managing large-scale update deployments and the critical need for robust and reliable patch management infrastructure. Organizations relying heavily on WSUS for timely security patching are particularly vulnerable during these outages, as delayed updates can leave systems exposed to known exploits.
Microsoft's ongoing efforts to address these persistent WSUS issues underscore the importance of maintaining a stable update delivery mechanism for its vast ecosystem of enterprise customers. The company is expected to provide further updates as more comprehensive solutions are deployed to fully restore normal operations and prevent future occurrences.
