Malwarebytes Enhances macOS Firewall with New User-Friendly Controls
Malwarebytes introduces Malwarebytes Firewall, a new feature that builds upon macOS's native firewall to offer users more intuitive control over network connections and privacy.

Malwarebytes has launched a new feature designed to simplify and enhance the network security capabilities already built into macOS. Dubbed Malwarebytes Firewall, this tool aims to provide users with a more accessible interface for managing their Mac's built-in firewall, which controls incoming connection requests from applications and other devices.
The native macOS firewall acts as a gatekeeper, deciding which connection requests are permitted and which should be blocked. This is crucial for allowing legitimate functions like file sharing or screen sharing to operate while preventing unwanted or potentially malicious connections. However, navigating and customizing these settings can be complex for the average user.
Malwarebytes Firewall addresses this by offering four distinct controls that streamline the management process. These include 'Stealth Mode,' which enhances privacy on public Wi-Fi by making the Mac less discoverable to other devices on the network. This is particularly useful for users frequently connecting to networks in hotels, coffee shops, or airports.
Another key feature is 'Strict Mode,' which offers a higher level of security by allowing only essential core services, such as web browsing and email, to connect. While this mode provides robust control, it may limit the functionality of certain features like AirDrop or screen-sharing, requiring users to balance security with convenience.
To further simplify user experience, Malwarebytes Firewall introduces 'Trust Apple apps' and 'Trust verified downloaded apps.' The former automatically permits built-in macOS applications like FaceTime and Messages to function without individual approval. The latter allows pre-approved, trusted third-party applications, such as Zoom or Outlook, to establish incoming connections without requiring repeated user confirmation.
These new controls offer flexibility depending on the user's environment. For home networks, enabling automatic trust settings for both Apple and verified downloaded applications provides a seamless experience. When connecting to public Wi-Fi, activating Stealth Mode offers an additional layer of privacy.
Malwarebytes emphasizes that users can switch between these settings as their network environment changes, ensuring they always have appropriate protection. The goal is to empower users to take greater control over their Mac's network security without needing to delve into intricate system menus.
This new feature is available to users who update to the latest version of Malwarebytes for Mac, offering a more intuitive approach to leveraging the existing firewall capabilities of macOS and improving overall network security and privacy management.
