F-Droid 2.0 Released After Decade With Major Redesign
F-Droid, the open-source Android app repository client, has launched version 2.0, marking its most significant update in ten years with a complete modernization of its codebase and user interface.
F-Droid has unveiled version 2.0 of its official Android application, representing its most substantial client update in a decade. This release follows over a year of dedicated development and 14 test builds, with a phased rollout commencing in the coming weeks. Moving beyond a superficial visual overhaul, F-Droid 2.0 features a fundamental rebuild of core components using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. This modernization effort not only updates the underlying code but also aligns the application's interface more closely with current Android Material Design principles, aiming to simplify future maintenance, testing, and feature additions.
The redesigned application streamlines its primary navigation into three distinct sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The Discover tab now consolidates app browsing and category exploration, while My Apps serves as a central hub for managing installed applications, viewing available updates, and addressing any potential issues. Settings and the Nearby Swap feature have been relocated to the top bar, contributing to a cleaner and less cluttered main navigation experience.
A significant focus of F-Droid 2.0 is the enhancement of application discovery. The Discover section prominently features newly added applications, recently updated software, and popular downloads from the repository. Categories have been expanded and refined beyond broad labels, providing users with more granular options to locate specialized software such as VPNs, firewalls, password managers, launchers, and navigation tools. Notably, the Games category has been segmented into 17 distinct genres, offering a more tailored browsing experience.
The search functionality has also undergone a substantial upgrade. F-Droid can now perform searches across application names, descriptions, categories, and translated text. The update further improves search capabilities for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages. Users can now apply multiple filters, including category, device compatibility, and anti-features, to precisely narrow down search results. This allows privacy-conscious users to more effectively find applications that meet their specific technical and licensing requirements.
Updates and installations have been re-envisioned in F-Droid 2.0. The client now automatically checks for and installs application updates by default, while still offering manual controls and fine-grained options for users who prefer them. The previous pull-to-refresh mechanism for checking updates has been moved to the overflow menu within the My Apps section. Furthermore, leveraging newer Android platform capabilities, F-Droid 2.0 utilizes pre-approval APIs on supported devices, enabling users to approve installations earlier in the process, rather than waiting for a download to complete.
Privacy features have also been revised. Tor configuration has been shifted towards generic proxy settings, with Tor VPN recommended for enhanced usability. The app-hiding feature now modifies only the application's icon and name, clearly indicating that the application remains discoverable within Android's system settings or during forensic analysis. However, F-Droid 2.0 currently does not support the F-Droid Privileged Extension, and its panic-trigger app-wiping capability has been temporarily removed. Users who rely on the app-wiping feature for critical safety or privacy needs may wish to postpone upgrading until this functionality is re-evaluated.
