Critical Privilege Escalation Vulnerability in Pods WordPress Plugin Affects Over 100,000 Sites
A critical unauthenticated privilege escalation vulnerability, CVE-2026-19598, in the popular Pods WordPress plugin allows attackers to gain administrator privileges, potentially leading to complete site takeover.

A critical security flaw has been identified in the Pods WordPress plugin, a widely used tool for creating custom content types and fields, impacting an estimated 100,000 websites. The vulnerability, cataloged as CVE-2026-19598, is an unauthenticated privilege escalation that allows attackers to gain administrator-level access to a WordPress site. This level of access enables malicious actors to perform a wide range of administrative actions, including resetting any user's password, even that of the site owner, ultimately leading to a complete compromise of the website.
The vulnerability was discovered by researcher Nhien Pham and responsibly reported through the Wordfence Bug Bounty Program, earning the researcher a $3,900 bounty. Wordfence highlighted the importance of such research in enhancing the security of the WordPress ecosystem. The security firm's Premium, Care, and Response users received immediate protection via a firewall rule on August 12, 2026, with free version users gaining the same protection 30 days later on September 11, 2026.
The Pods development team was notified of the vulnerability on August 12, 2026, and responded promptly by releasing a patched version, 3.3.9.1, on August 14, 2026. In recognition of the critical nature of the flaw, the plugin vendor collaborated with the WordPress.org plugins team to implement a forced update for all users running a vulnerable version. This measure aims to ensure that the vast majority of affected sites are patched as quickly as possible.
Despite the forced update, users are strongly advised to verify that their Pods plugin has been updated to the latest patched version. The fix has also been backported to previous major releases, including versions 3.2.8.3, 3.1.4.2, 3.0.10.4, 2.9.19.4, and 2.8.23.4. The vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 9.8, classifying it as Critical.
Technically, the vulnerability stems from an authorization bypass within the plugin's pods_admin AJAX router. This router is responsible for handling various administrative functions. While it includes checks for user authentication, nonces, and capabilities, these checks are not consistently enforced. Specifically, under a compatibility path for meta-box-loaders, the pods_error() function, which is intended to halt execution upon a failed check, only logs the error and returns false instead of terminating the request. This oversight allows unauthenticated requests to bypass security guards and execute administrative methods.
The admin_ajax() function within the PodsAdmin class processes these requests. It defines an allowlist of permitted methods and then applies a series of security checks. However, the reliance on pods_error() for request termination means that if pods_error() fails to halt execution, the subsequent administrative actions can be performed by an unauthenticated attacker. This flaw enables attackers to escalate their privileges to administrator level, allowing them to take full control of the website or perform other malicious actions.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of securing the vast WordPress plugin ecosystem. With hundreds of thousands of active installations, vulnerabilities in popular plugins like Pods can have widespread consequences. The prompt patching and forced update demonstrate a positive collaboration between security researchers, plugin developers, and the WordPress security team, but it also highlights the need for continuous vigilance and rapid response to such critical threats.
