Cloudflare Launches Workers KV Instant for Faster Global Data Replication
Cloudflare introduces Workers KV Instant, a new mode for its Workers KV service powered by its internal Quicksilver key-value store, offering significantly faster global replication and lower read latency.

Cloudflare has announced Workers KV Instant, a new operational mode for its popular Workers KV service. This enhancement leverages Cloudflare's high-performance internal key-value store, Quicksilver, to provide developers with dramatically improved global data replication speeds and reduced read latency.
Workers KV, first launched in 2018, has been a staple for developers needing to store and access data that is written infrequently but read often, such as static assets and user configurations. Cloudflare itself relies heavily on Quicksilver, a system designed for extremely fast global replication and low-latency access, which underpins a significant portion of Cloudflare's own network operations. Now, Quicksilver is being made available to customers through KV Instant.
The new KV Instant mode offers performance metrics that far exceed the classic Workers KV. It boasts p99 read latencies under 2 milliseconds, a more than 100x improvement over the classic mode's 160ms. Writes are replicated globally in under 250 milliseconds for 99% of operations, a substantial leap from the seconds or even minutes it could take for classic KV. This makes KV Instant ideal for real-time application data, such as feature flags or configuration settings that need to be updated and reflected worldwide almost instantaneously.
While offering the same familiar API as Workers KV (get(), put(), list(), delete()), KV Instant has a few key differences. Developers must explicitly select the "instant" mode when creating a KV namespace. Metadata support is removed, meaning getWithMetadata calls will return null, and metadata cannot be passed during put operations. Additionally, list operations will return all matching keys without pagination, and writes are restricted to one per namespace per second to maintain consistency.
KV Instant is particularly suited for infrequently updated application configuration data, where immediate global availability is critical. Cloudflare highlights its use case for managing homepage content during a product launch, ensuring updates are live precisely when needed. However, it is not designed for large data storage or frequent write-heavy workloads.
Pricing for KV Instant reflects its performance characteristics. Reads (Class B operations) are significantly cheaper, costing $0.20 per million operations, a 60% reduction compared to classic Workers KV. Storage, however, is considerably more expensive at $100 per MB per month, and Class A operations (put, delete, list) are priced at $0.10 per operation. This structure encourages its use for small, read-intensive configuration data.
Currently, Workers KV Instant is available in a private beta. Cloudflare plans to expand access following initial customer feedback. This move signifies Cloudflare's ongoing commitment to providing developers with powerful, low-latency tools for building global applications on its edge network.
