Chainguard Harness Leverages Frontier AI for Real-Time Application Vulnerability Detection
Chainguard Harness introduces an AI-driven approach to finding and fixing exploitable vulnerabilities in running applications, utilizing advanced models like Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5.1.

Chainguard has launched Chainguard Harness, a novel cybersecurity tool designed to proactively identify and remediate exploitable vulnerabilities within live application code. By integrating frontier artificial intelligence models, such as Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5.1, Harness aims to provide development teams with a more efficient and accurate method for securing their software.
The core functionality of Chainguard Harness involves building an application from its source code within an isolated microVM environment. Once the application is running, the AI model is directed to actively search for exploitable vulnerabilities. A key feature is the system's ability to reproduce any identified findings in a controlled setting before presenting a tailored, human-reviewed fix to the development team. This process ensures that teams receive actionable intelligence and validated solutions, rather than sifting through numerous false positives often generated by traditional scanning tools.
Traditional security scanners typically analyze static code, which can lead to a high volume of alerts for issues that may not be practically exploitable. These scanners often miss complex logic flaws or vulnerabilities that only manifest during runtime. Chainguard Harness addresses this gap by testing applications in a live, running state, mimicking the approach of an actual attacker. This context-aware testing allows the AI to uncover vulnerabilities that static analysis would miss, providing a more comprehensive security assessment.
According to Dan Lorenc, CEO of Chainguard, "Every time we’ve pointed Harness at code, it has found serious, exploitable vulnerabilities, including in software that’s been scanned many times over and code that runs critical infrastructure." This underscores the tool's effectiveness in uncovering previously undetected flaws. The company emphasizes that teams acting quickly on these proven vulnerabilities and fixes will be better positioned to prevent security incidents.
The Chainguard Harness workflow begins with connecting to a team's code repository via the Guardener GitHub app. The application is then built precisely as it is deployed and executed within an isolated microVM sandbox. This environment is designed with strict security controls, including no network egress, no embedded credentials, and comprehensive audit logging. The AI probes the running application, and all findings are rigorously replayed in fresh environments to ensure reproducibility before being presented to the customer.
Key features of Chainguard Harness include access to frontier AI capabilities without requiring organizations to manage their own frontier model infrastructure. It is specifically designed to detect runtime bugs, offers robust isolation for testing, guarantees reproducible findings, and provides custom fixes tailored to the specific codebase. Furthermore, every fix and report undergoes human review by a Chainguard engineer, and vulnerabilities found in open-source components are disclosed responsibly upstream through Chainguard's Athena process.
Chainguard Harness is available through the Claude Marketplace by Anthropic. This integration allows enterprises to leverage their existing Anthropic commitments to procure the tool, streamlining the purchasing process and consolidating AI spending. Anthropic manages the invoicing, making it easier for customers to adopt Harness without a separate procurement cycle.
Daniela Hurtado, Head of Commercial Cyber at Anthropic, highlighted the importance of how AI capabilities are deployed. "Chainguard Harness surrounds Mythos 5.1 with isolation, reproduction, and human review, so defenders get the benefit, and every finding is verified before it reaches a customer," she stated. This approach ensures that the power of frontier AI is harnessed responsibly and effectively for defensive security purposes.
