Android Passkey and Password Transfers Streamlined Between Managers
Google has introduced a new Android feature enabling direct, secure transfer of passkeys and passwords between password managers, eliminating insecure file exports.

Google has rolled out a significant enhancement to Android's security and user experience by enabling direct transfer of passwords and passkeys between different password management applications. This new functionality eliminates the long-standing practice of exporting sensitive credentials into unencrypted text files, a process that historically left data vulnerable to exposure on user devices.
The traditional method of migrating passwords often involved downloading them as plain text files, which posed a considerable security risk. Passkeys, which are designed to be more secure than passwords and are stored within password managers, were previously untransferable between different manager applications. This meant users had to manually recreate their passkeys for each service if they wished to switch providers, a tedious and error-prone process.
With the new feature, users can initiate the transfer directly from the destination password manager app. Android then facilitates a secure handoff, allowing the data to move between the applications in a matter of seconds. This streamlined process not only enhances security by avoiding intermediate unencrypted files but also significantly improves user convenience.
To utilize this feature, users simply open their preferred new password manager and select the option to import or copy credentials from another provider. Android then identifies compatible password managers already installed on the device. After the user selects the source manager and authorizes the transfer, the data is securely moved.
Currently, four popular password managers support this new transfer flow: Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. Google has indicated that more partners are expected to integrate this capability in the future, though specific timelines and additional names have not yet been provided. The company has also not detailed the specific Android versions that support this feature or the precise security mechanisms protecting the data during transit, beyond stating the handoff is secure.
For users whose current password manager is not among the initial four supported applications, the process of switching still requires exporting data, and passkeys will remain in their original manager. This highlights the ongoing need for broader industry adoption of the new transfer standard to fully realize its security and convenience benefits across the entire Android ecosystem.
