AI-Assisted Hacking Operation Compromises 90 South Korean Organizations, Steals 8.2 Million Records
South Korean police have arrested a suspect in an AI-assisted hacking operation that compromised approximately 90 organizations and stole 8.2 million records, marking one of the country's first large-scale generative AI hacking cases.

South Korean authorities have apprehended a 32-year-old individual accused of orchestrating an extensive AI-powered hacking campaign that pilfered personal records and internal files from around 90 organizations, resulting in the theft of 8.2 million records. The targeted entities spanned a diverse range of sectors, including hospitals, private educational institutions, golf courses, universities, and subsidiaries of large corporations. Investigators revealed that the stolen data was subsequently leveraged for extortion purposes, with the group pressuring victims to pay money.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency disclosed the details of the case on October 26. The alleged ringleader, identified only as "A," was taken into custody on October 15 and subsequently referred to prosecutors on October 23. Six other individuals are reportedly under investigation but have not been detained. The cyberattacks are believed to have commenced in September 2025 and continued through October 2026.
Despite lacking formal information technology education, the suspect reportedly acquired hacking skills through self-study of online materials. His prior employment in penetration testing at a security firm between 2019 and 2022 provided him with practical experience that investigators believe informed the alleged criminal activities. Initially, the suspect employed conventional hacking tools to identify vulnerabilities in websites.
However, investigators noted a significant escalation in the operation's sophistication starting in late August 2026, when the suspect began integrating generative AI tools more extensively. Approximately 60 of the compromised organizations were reportedly breached with the assistance of these AI tools, indicating that AI was not necessarily involved in every single intrusion from the outset.
The framework identified as ARTEX, an AI penetration testing tool, has been linked to this operation and was also implicated in separate attacks against South Korean financial institutions. While the use of a shared tool suggests a potential connection, public reporting does not definitively confirm that the same actors were responsible for both campaigns. Furthermore, a complete attack chain, including a definitive list of exploited vulnerabilities or specific malware details, has not been fully disclosed, nor is there evidence that AI independently executed every breach.
Following the data exfiltration, the suspects allegedly issued threatening messages to the affected organizations. These messages warned of reputational damage and potential government fines if the stolen information were to be publicly disclosed. Police identified 38 organizations that were targets of extortion attempts, with demands collectively reaching approximately 360 million won (around $260,000 USD), though this figure represents the amount demanded, not necessarily the amount paid.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint from a victim in June. Law enforcement traced the malicious activity through server logs from the affected organizations and utilized an internal AI analysis system to examine the digital evidence. Authorities successfully recovered a portion of the stolen information and are continuing to investigate whether copies have surfaced on the dark web or been used in further criminal activities.
Authorities have characterized this case as South Korea's first large-scale generative AI hacking incident of its kind. The suspect's background in penetration testing suggests an experienced individual adopting AI tools, rather than an untrained novice replicating the results. This case emerges amidst broader concerns regarding cybersecurity within South Korea's financial sector and ongoing security assessments, highlighting the evolving threat landscape where AI plays an increasingly prominent role.
