1Password Integrates with Claude AI for Secure Website Authentication
1Password and Anthropic's Claude AI are teaming up to allow the AI assistant to log into websites without directly exposing user credentials, enhancing security for AI-driven tasks.

1Password has launched a beta integration, dubbed "1Password for Claude," designed to enable Anthropic's Claude AI assistant to perform authenticated browser tasks securely. This new feature allows Claude Desktop on macOS to interact with websites requiring logins without ever directly accessing or exposing users' sensitive credentials.
The integration is available to paid subscribers of both Claude (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise) and 1Password (individual, family, and business plans). To utilize this functionality, users must have Claude Desktop and the Claude browser extension installed on their Mac, alongside the 1Password desktop application and its browser extension. For enterprise deployments, administrators must explicitly enable the integration.
Users initiate the connection by linking their 1Password account to Claude through the Connectors section within Claude Desktop. Once authenticated and the 1Password vault is unlocked, Claude can request credentials when needed for a specific task. This process requires explicit user approval for each credential request.
When Claude encounters a sign-in page, it prompts the user via the 1Password extension to approve the credential usage. The extension clearly states which login is being requested and the reason for it. Users can approve the request, select an alternative saved login, or deny access. Approved requests are authenticated using biometric methods like Touch ID.
Crucially, the actual password or other secrets are filled into the web form through a secure channel managed by 1Password. According to 1Password, these sensitive values never enter Claude's context window, its memory, or Anthropic's infrastructure. Usernames are only shared when necessary to complete the sign-in process.
Access to credentials is strictly limited to the duration of the current task. Once the task concludes, Claude must re-request and receive explicit user approval to use the same credential again. This granular control is further enhanced by 1Password's "Agentic Mode" in its browser extension, which activates automatically when Claude takes control of the browser. Agentic Mode locks down the extension's interface from Claude, restricts access to only approved credentials for the task, and keeps the rest of the vault inaccessible.
Nancy Wang, CTO of 1Password, emphasized the need for a new security model tailored for AI agents. "The answer isn’t handing agents your secrets. It is to let a user give an agent permission to use a credential without letting the agent see it," she stated, highlighting the distinction between an agent knowing a login was used and needing the actual password. This integration aims to build trust in AI agents by providing secure, permission-based access to credentials for agentic workflows like managing online accounts or completing purchases.
Currently, 1Password for Claude supports logins and Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP). Support for other item types, such as payment cards and identities, is not included at launch. Users experiencing setup difficulties are advised to ensure all required software components are installed and updated, their 1Password vault is unlocked, and the integration is correctly configured within Claude.
