CVE-2026-8783
Description
A security vulnerability has been detected in omec-project amf up to 2.1.3-dev. This impacts the function UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse of the file ngap/dispatcher.go. Such manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. The attack can be executed remotely. The exploit has been disclosed publicly and may be used. Upgrading to version 2.2.0 will fix this issue. Upgrading the affected component is advised. The same pull request fixes multiple security issues.
AI Insight
LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.
Null pointer dereference in UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse of omec-project AMF (<=2.1.3-dev) allows remote attackers to crash the AMF via a malformed NGAP message.
Vulnerability
A null pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the HandleUERadioCapabilityCheckResponse function within ngap/handler.go of omec-project AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function) [1]. This function is called when processing a UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse NGAP message. Affected versions include all releases up to v2.1.3-dev. The bug can be triggered by sending a malformed NGAP message that causes a nil pointer dereference [2].
Exploitation
An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a specially crafted UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse NGAP message to the AMF. The hex payload 20 2B 00 1B 80 00 01 00 00 40 05 80 EC 1C C5 56 00 0A 00 06 80 14 EB AA 59 6E 00 1E 20 01 00 has been shown to cause a panic [2]. No authentication or prior knowledge is required, only network connectivity to the AMF's N2 interface.
Impact
Successful exploitation results in a segmentation violation (SIGSEGV) and immediate crash of the AMF process, leading to denial of service for 5G core network functions handled by the AMF [2]. There is no evidence of code execution or information disclosure.
Mitigation
The vulnerability is fixed in AMF version v2.2.0 [4]. Users should upgrade to this version or later. The fix was implemented in pull request #666, which added nil guards for multiple NGAP handlers [3]. No workarounds have been publicly disclosed for versions prior to the fix.

VERSION+1 −1 modified@@ -1 +1 @@ -2.1.3-dev +2.2.0
Vulnerability mechanics
Root cause
"Missing nil checks on NGAP protocol IE pointers (RANUENGAPID, AMFUENGAPID, and others) before dereferencing their .Value field leads to a null pointer dereference."
Attack vector
An attacker with network access to the AMF's NGAP endpoint sends a crafted NGAP message (e.g., UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse, HandoverNotify, or any message handled by FetchRanUeContext) that omits mandatory IEs such as RANUENGAPID or AMFUENGAPID. Because the code previously called `.Value` on these pointers without a nil check, the malformed message triggers a nil pointer dereference and crashes the AMF process. The attacker needs only low-privilege network access (CVSS PR:L) and no authentication, as the NGAP interface is exposed to the RAN.
Affected code
The vulnerability is in `ngap/dispatcher.go` (the `DispatchNgapMsg` function and the `UERadioCapabilityCheckResponse` handling path) and `ngap/handler.go` (the `FetchRanUeContext` function and multiple handler functions such as `HandleUERadioCapabilityCheckResponse`, `HandleHandoverNotify`, `HandleHandoverRequestAcknowledge`, `HandleLocationReport`, and `HandlePDUSessionResourceModifyIndication`). The root cause is the lack of nil-pointer checks before accessing `.Value` on NGAP protocol IE pointers like `rANUENGAPID` and `aMFUENGAPID`.
What the fix does
The patch introduces helper functions `findRanUeByRanNgapID` and `findRanUeByAmfNgapID` that check for nil before accessing `.Value`, and replaces all direct calls to `ran.RanUeFindByRanUeNgapID(rANUENGAPID.Value)` and `context.AMF_Self().RanUeFindByAmfUeNgapID(aMFUENGAPID.Value)` with these safe wrappers. Additionally, explicit nil checks are added at the top of `HandleUERadioCapabilityCheckResponse`, `HandleHandoverNotify`, `HandleHandoverRequestAcknowledge`, `HandleLocationReport`, `HandlePDUSessionResourceModifyIndication`, and `DispatchNgapMsg` so that missing mandatory IEs cause a graceful early return instead of a panic. The same pattern is applied to `printAndGetCause` to guard against nil cause sub-fields.
Preconditions
- networkAttacker must be able to send NGAP messages to the AMF's SCTP endpoint
- authNo authentication required; the NGAP interface is exposed to the RAN network
