CVE-2026-8781
Description
A security flaw has been discovered in omec-project amf up to 2.1.3-dev. The impacted element is the function RANConfiguration of the file ngap/handler.go. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. The attack may be launched remotely. The exploit has been released to the public and may be used for attacks. Upgrading to version 2.2.0 is sufficient to resolve this issue. Upgrading the affected component is recommended. The same pull request fixes multiple security issues.
AI Insight
LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.
A null pointer dereference in AMF's RANConfiguration handler (ngap/handler.go) allows remote attackers to crash the service via a malformed NGAP message.
Vulnerability
A null pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the HandleRanConfigurationUpdate function within the ngap/handler.go file of omec-project amf up to version 2.1.3-dev [1]. The issue occurs when processing a malformed RANConfiguration NGAP message, where the function attempts to dereference a nil pointer, leading to a panic [1]. The affected component is the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF), a control plane function in the 5G core network [2]. The bug was introduced in versions prior to 2.2.0 [4].
Exploitation
An attacker on the network can send a crafted RANConfiguration NGAP message to the AMF [1]. The reproduction steps in the advisory demonstrate sending a specific malformed NGAP message that triggers the nil pointer dereference, confirmed by the AMF log output showing a panic with segmentation violation [1]. No authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability; the attack is launched remotely [1].
Impact
Successful exploitation causes the AMF process to crash due to a runtime panic, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition [1]. The crash terminates the AMF's ability to handle signaling traffic, impacting 5G core network services such as registration, mobility management, and session management [2]. The vulnerability does not lead to arbitrary code execution or data leakage.
Mitigation
Upgrading to AMF version 2.2.0 resolves the issue [1][4]. This version includes fixes in pull request #666, which addressed multiple cases of crashes due to malformed NGAP input [3][4]. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability. Organizations should apply the update promptly [1].

VERSION+1 −1 modified@@ -1 +1 @@ -2.1.3-dev +2.2.0
Vulnerability mechanics
Root cause
"Missing nil checks on NGAP protocol-IE pointers in `ngap/handler.go` allow a malformed NGAP message to cause a NULL pointer dereference."
Attack vector
An attacker with network access to the AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function) sends a crafted NGAP message that omits mandatory Information Elements such as `RANUENGAPID`, `AMFUENGAPID`, `SupportedTAList`, or `ResetType`. The `FetchRanUeContext` function and several handler functions in `ngap/handler.go` [patch_id=424442] directly dereference `.Value` on these nil pointers, causing a NULL pointer dereference [CWE-476]. The attack requires only low-privilege network access (CVSS PR:L) and no authentication, as NGAP messages are accepted over the N2 interface from any gNB that can establish an SCTP association.
Affected code
The primary vulnerable function is `FetchRanUeContext` in `ngap/handler.go`, which directly accesses `.Value` on `rANUENGAPID` and `aMFUENGAPID` without nil checks. Additional vulnerable handlers in the same file include `HandleNGSetupRequest`, `HandleNGReset`, `HandleUERadioCapabilityCheckResponse`, `HandlePDUSessionResourceModifyIndication`, `HandleHandoverNotify`, `HandleHandoverRequestAcknowledge`, `HandleRanConfigurationUpdate`, `HandleLocationReport`, and `printAndGetCause`. The dispatcher functions `DispatchLb`, `Dispatch`, and `DispatchNgapMsg` in `ngap/dispatcher.go` also lacked nil guards for their input parameters.
What the fix does
The patch [patch_id=424442] introduces wrapper functions `findRanUeByRanNgapID` and `findRanUeByAmfNgapID` that check for nil before accessing `.Value`, and adds early-return nil guards in `HandleNGSetupRequest`, `HandleNGReset`, `HandleUERadioCapabilityCheckResponse`, `HandlePDUSessionResourceModifyIndication`, `HandleHandoverNotify`, `HandleHandoverRequestAcknowledge`, `HandleRanConfigurationUpdate`, `HandleLocationReport`, and `printAndGetCause`. These guards log the missing IE and return immediately, preventing the NULL pointer dereference. The same approach is applied in `ngap/dispatcher.go` to guard against nil `sctplbMsg`, nil `ran`, nil `conn`, and nil `pdu`.
Preconditions
- networkAttacker must be able to send NGAP messages over SCTP to the AMF's N2 interface.
- configThe AMF must be running a version prior to 2.2.0 (up to 2.1.3-dev).
Reproduction
The bundle includes a public exploit/PoC reference. A minimal reproduction is to send an NGAP InitialUEMessage (or any of the affected procedure codes) with an empty or missing RANUENGAPID IE. The test functions in `ngap/handler_test.go` [patch_id=424442] demonstrate that passing a `HandoverNotify` or `InitialUEMessage` PDU without the required IDs triggers a panic in the unpatched code. For example, sending a `HandoverNotify` with no ProtocolIEs causes `HandleHandoverNotify` to dereference nil `aMFUENGAPID` and `rANUENGAPID` pointers.
