CVE-2026-46199
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm/amdgpu/vcn4: Prevent OOB reads when parsing dec msg
Check bounds against the end of the BO whenever we access the msg.
AI Insight
LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.
A missing bounds check in the Linux kernel's AMDGPU VCN 4.0 driver when parsing a decode message allows an out-of-bounds read from a BO, potentially leaking sensitive data.
Vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the drm/amdgpu/vcn4 driver suffers from an out-of-bounds (OOB) read vulnerability when parsing a decode message. The issue is in the code path that accesses fields of the message without first verifying the offset and size against the end of the buffer object (BO). Affected versions include all kernel builds with this driver enabled until the fix was applied; the patch is identified by commit c72a8b4dc6d598e3831ef3abd9c6527dfbf4810e in the stable tree [1].
Exploitation
An attacker would need a local user account with sufficient privileges to submit a crafted decode command to the AMDGPU driver, typically via the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) interface. No special physical proximity or network position is required — a malicious local process can trigger the vulnerable code path by providing a malformed message that causes the driver to read past the valid buffer boundaries.
Impact
Successful exploitation leads to an out-of-bounds read from kernel memory. This may disclose sensitive information (e.g., kernel addresses or other data) back to the attacker. The vulnerability is classified as an information leak; it does not directly provide code execution or write access, but the leaked data can undermine kernel security protections (like KASLR) and assist in further attacks.
Mitigation
The fix is included in the stable kernel tree as commit c72a8b4dc6d598e3831ef3abd9c6527dfbf4810e [1]. Users should apply the patch from their Linux distribution's kernel updates. No workaround is available; the only mitigation is to update to a kernel version containing the fix. The CVE is not listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog as of the publication date.

Vulnerability mechanics
Root cause
"Missing bounds checks when parsing a VCN decode message allow out-of-bounds reads beyond the allocated buffer object."
Attack vector
An attacker with the ability to submit a crafted VCN decode command to the AMDGPU kernel driver can cause out-of-bounds reads. The `vcn_v4_0_dec_msg` function [patch_id=2897825] reads `msg[1]` (claimed length), `msg[2]` (number of buffers), and `msg[3]` (message type) without first verifying that the BO is large enough to contain even a minimal 4-DWORD header. It then uses the attacker-controlled `num_buffers` value to iterate past the header, reading 4 DWORDs per buffer without checking that the total claimed length covers those accesses. The original bounds check `offset + size > end` also compared against an incorrect end value (`end` instead of `end - addr`), allowing reads beyond the BO boundary.
Affected code
The vulnerability resides in the `vcn_v4_0_dec_msg` function within `drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/vcn_v4_0.c` [patch_id=2897825]. The function parses a decode message from a buffer object (BO) but lacked sufficient bounds checks before reading message header fields and iterating over buffer descriptors.
What the fix does
The patch adds four new checks [patch_id=2897825]. First, it rejects messages smaller than 16 bytes (4 DWORDs) before any header fields are read. Second, it computes `len_dw = msg[1] / 4` and validates that `num_buffers` does not exceed `len_dw` and that the buffer descriptor region (`6 + num_buffers * 4`) fits within the claimed length. Third, the per-buffer bounds check now uses `end - addr` (the correct BO size) instead of `end`, and also requires `size >= 4`. These changes ensure every read from the message buffer stays within the allocated BO.
Preconditions
- inputAttacker must be able to submit a crafted AMDGPU command submission (CS) that triggers the VCN decode message path.
- configThe kernel must have the amdgpu driver with VCN v4 hardware support loaded.
