CVE-2025-71304
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
smack: /smack/doi: accept previously used values
Writing to /smack/doi a value that has ever been written there in the past disables networking for non-ambient labels. E.g.
# cat /smack/doi 3 # netlabelctl -p cipso list Configured CIPSO mappings (1) DOI value : 3 mapping type : PASS_THROUGH # netlabelctl -p map list Configured NetLabel domain mappings (3) domain: "_" (IPv4) protocol: UNLABELED domain: DEFAULT (IPv4) protocol: CIPSO, DOI = 3 domain: DEFAULT (IPv6) protocol: UNLABELED
# cat /smack/ambient _ # cat /proc/$$/attr/smack/current _ # ping -c1 10.1.95.12 64 bytes from 10.1.95.12: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.964 ms # echo foo >/proc/$$/attr/smack/current # ping -c1 10.1.95.12 64 bytes from 10.1.95.12: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.956 ms unknown option 86
# echo 4 >/smack/doi # echo 3 >/smack/doi !> [ 214.050395] smk_cipso_doi:691 cipso add rc = -17 # echo 3 >/smack/doi !> [ 249.402261] smk_cipso_doi:678 remove rc = -2 !> [ 249.402261] smk_cipso_doi:691 cipso add rc = -17
# ping -c1 10.1.95.12 !!> ping: 10.1.95.12: Address family for hostname not supported
# echo _ >/proc/$$/attr/smack/current # ping -c1 10.1.95.12 64 bytes from 10.1.95.12: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.617 ms
This happens because Smack keeps decommissioned DOIs, fails to re-add them, and consequently refuses to add the “default” domain map:
# netlabelctl -p cipso list Configured CIPSO mappings (2) DOI value : 3 mapping type : PASS_THROUGH DOI value : 4 mapping type : PASS_THROUGH # netlabelctl -p map list Configured NetLabel domain mappings (2) domain: "_" (IPv4) protocol: UNLABELED !> (no ipv4 map for default domain here) domain: DEFAULT (IPv6) protocol: UNLABELED
Fix by clearing decommissioned DOI definitions and serializing concurrent DOI updates with a new lock.
Also: - allow /smack/doi to live unconfigured, since adding a map (netlbl_cfg_cipsov4_map_add) may fail. CIPSO_V4_DOI_UNKNOWN(0) indicates the unconfigured DOI - add new DOI before removing the old default map, so the old map remains if the add fails

LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.
Writing a previously used value to /smack/doi in the Linux kernel disables networking for non-ambient labels due to stale decommissioned DOI entries.
Vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the Smack security module incorrectly handles DOI (Domain of Interpretation) values written to the /smack/doi pseudo-file. When a previously used DOI value is written again, Smack fails to properly clear decommissioned entries, resulting in a NETLBL_DOMAIN mapping being omitted, specifically for the default domain (IPv4). This affects all kernel versions prior to the patch [1].
Exploitation
An attacker with local access (or the ability to write to /smack/doi, which typically requires root privileges) can exploit this by first writing a new DOI value to the file, then writing back the original value that was used before. The Smack code then attempts to remove and re-add the old DOI but fails silently due to stale data structures, leaving the system without a valid default domain CIPSO mapping for IPv4. No network access is required for the trigger; the exploitation is local [1].
Impact
Successful exploitation causes networking to fail for sockets using non-ambient labels (i.e., labels other than the ambient label). As shown in the official description, processes with a non-ambient label receive "Address family for hostname not supported" errors, effectively disabling IP networking for those processes. This can lead to denial of service for any service or user relying on Catamount/Smack label-based networking policies. The issue does not require any special capability beyond write access to the /smack/doi file [1].
Mitigation
The fix is included in Linux kernel commit [1] and should be applied by updating to a kernel version containing this patch. Distributions that have backported the fix will indicate the version. There is no known workaround other than avoiding the use of repeated DOI writes or restricting write access to /smack/doi to trusted users. The vulnerability is not listed on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog as of publication.

Vulnerability mechanics
Root cause
"Smack never deletes decommissioned CIPSO DOI definitions from the NetLabel subsystem, so re-adding a previously used DOI fails and the default domain map is lost."
Attack vector
An attacker with local root privileges (or CAP_MAC_ADMIN) writes a new DOI value to `/smack/doi`, then writes back a previously used DOI value. Because the old code never deleted the stale CIPSO DOI from the NetLabel layer, the second write fails with `-EEXIST` (rc=-17) and the "default" domain map is never re-added. Consequently, IPv4 networking for non-ambient Smack labels breaks — `ping` returns "Address family for hostname not supported" — while ambient-labeled processes still work [patch_id=2662217].
Affected code
The vulnerability resides in `security/smack/smackfs.c` in the `smk_cipso_doi()` function and the `smk_write_doi()` handler for the `/smack/doi` pseudo-file. The old code unconditionally set `smk_cipso_doi_value` to the user-supplied value before calling `smk_cipso_doi()`, and `smk_cipso_doi()` never cleaned up decommissioned DOI definitions from the NetLabel subsystem [patch_id=2662217].
What the fix does
The patch restructures `smk_cipso_doi()` to accept the new DOI as a parameter, adds a new mutex (`smk_cipso_doi_lock`) to serialize concurrent writes, and changes the initial value of `smk_cipso_doi_value` to `CIPSO_V4_DOI_UNKNOWN` (0) to allow the DOI to live unconfigured. Crucially, the new code first adds the new CIPSO DOI via `netlbl_cfg_cipsov4_add()`, then — only if a previous DOI was configured — deletes the old default map and the old DOI via `netlbl_cfg_map_del()` and `netlbl_cfg_cipsov4_del()`. This ensures stale DOIs are cleaned up before re-adding a previously used value, and the old map remains in place if the new add fails [patch_id=2662217].
Preconditions
- authAttacker must have CAP_MAC_ADMIN (typically root) to write to /smack/doi
- configSmack LSM must be enabled and a CIPSO DOI must have been previously configured
- inputAttacker writes a new DOI value, then writes back the original DOI value
