CVE-2025-68202
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
sched_ext: Fix unsafe locking in the scx_dump_state()
For built with CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y kernels, the dump_lock will be converted sleepable spinlock and not disable-irq, so the following scenarios occur:

This commit therefore use rq_lock_irqsave/irqrestore() to replace rq_lock/unlock() in the scx_dump_state().
AI Insight
LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.
A lock ordering violation in sched_ext's scx_dump_state() can cause a deadlock on PREEMPT_RT kernels.
Analysis
The vulnerability resides in the scx_dump_state() function within the Linux kernel's sched_ext subsystem. On kernels built with CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y, the dump_lock is converted to a sleepable spinlock that does not disable interrupts. This creates a scenario where the lock is acquired in a context where hard IRQs are enabled, while the same runqueue spinlock (&rq->__lock) is taken in hard-IRQ context (e.g., sched_tick via timer_interrupt). The kernel's lockdep mechanism detects this as a potential deadlock: lock(&rq->__lock) followed by an interrupt that also tries to acquire the same lock.
Exploitation and
Impact
An attacker who can trigger the vulnerable code path (for example, by causing a sched_ext dump) on a system running a PREEMPT_RT kernel could exploit this unsafe locking. The result is a system deadlock (hang) as described in the kernel debug output. No authentication is required to trigger the issue if the attacker has the ability to invoke the dump mechanism, which may be accessible to unprivileged users depending on the kernel configuration.
Mitigation
The fix is included in Linux kernel stable commits [1] and [2]. Administrators should apply the latest kernel updates to avoid this deadlock. No workaround is documented for unpatched systems.
