AI Insight

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth subsystem, triggered by missing locking in hci_conn_tx_dequeue when processing HCI_EV_NUM_COMP_PKTS events.

Vulnerability

CVE-2025-39983 is a use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth subsystem. The bug occurs in the hci_conn_tx_dequeue function, which is called when processing HCI_EV_NUM_COMP_PKTS events. The root cause is a missing lock on hdev (the HCI device structure) before accessing connection-related data, leading to a race condition where a connection can be freed while still being accessed [1].

Exploitation

An attacker can trigger this vulnerability by sending a crafted Bluetooth HCI event packet that causes the kernel-side. The attack surface is local, requiring the ability to inject HCI events, which typically means physical proximity or compromised Bluetooth firmware. No special privileges are needed beyond the ability to send Bluetooth packets. The race condition occurs in the workqueue context (`hci_rx_work, making it exploitable without user interaction [1].

Impact

Successful exploitation results in a use-after-free condition, which can lead to memory corruption, system crash (denial of service), or potentially arbitrary code execution in kernel context. The KASAN report confirms a slab-use-after-free read of size 4, indicating an attacker could control the freed memory to hijack control flow [1].

Mitigation

The fix is included in the Linux kernel stable tree as commit 2e128683176a. Users are advised to update to a kernel version containing this patch. No workaround is available; the vulnerability is patched in the latest stable releases [1].
