CVE-2023-54308

CVE-2023-54308

Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ALSA: ymfpci: Create card with device-managed snd_devm_card_new()

snd_card_ymfpci_remove() was removed in commit c6e6bb5eab74 ("ALSA: ymfpci: Allocate resources with device-managed APIs"), but the call to snd_card_new() was not replaced with snd_devm_card_new().

Since there was no longer a call to snd_card_free, unloading the module would eventually result in Oops:

AI Insight

LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.

A missing device-managed card allocation in the snd-ymfpci driver causes a use-after-free Oops when the module is unloaded.

Vulnerability

In the Linux kernel's ALSA subsystem, the snd-ymfpci driver was partially converted to use device-managed APIs in commit c6e6bb5eab74, but the call to snd_card_new() was not replaced with snd_devm_card_new(). This oversight meant that when the module was unloaded, the sound card structure could be freed while still being referenced, leading to a use-after-free condition.

Exploitation

The vulnerability is triggered by unloading the snd-ymfpci module. No special authentication or network access is required—any user capable of unloading kernel modules (typically root) on a system with a YMFPCI sound device can trigger the Oops. The crash occurs when another process (e.g., wireplumber) holds a reference to the card and attempts to access module data after the card has been freed, as shown in the page fault at address ffffffffc0924480 in the try_module_get path [1].

Impact

An attacker with local root privileges can cause a denial-of-service by forcibly unloading the module, resulting in a kernel crash (Oops). This can disrupt system availability. The traceback indicates a supervisor-level page fault, confirming that the kernel accesses invalid memory after the card's resources are released.

Mitigation

The fix replaces snd_card_new() with snd_devm_card_new() to ensure the card is automatically freed when the device is removed, preventing the use-after-free. Patches have been applied to the stable kernel trees as of the reference commits [2].
