Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

CVE-2021-1343

Description

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. These vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device.

Authenticated remote code execution and DoS vulnerabilities in Cisco Small Business RV series routers due to improper input validation in web-based management interface.

Vulnerability

Multiple vulnerabilities exist in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers due to improper validation of user-supplied input [1]. An authenticated attacker can exploit these by sending crafted HTTP requests. The vulnerabilities affect all firmware versions prior to the fixed releases provided by Cisco.

Exploitation

An attacker must have valid administrator credentials for the affected device. With these credentials, the attacker can send specially crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface. No additional user interaction is required. The improper input validation allows the attacker to trigger memory corruption or other conditions leading to code execution or device reload.

Impact

Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system, resulting in full compromise of the device. Alternatively, the attacker can cause the device to reload, leading to a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Mitigation

Cisco has released free software updates to fix these vulnerabilities [1]. Customers should upgrade their devices to the latest firmware version for their specific model. No workarounds are available. The vulnerabilities are not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog as of the publication date.
