Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

CVE-2021-1199

Description

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. The vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device. Cisco has not released software updates that address these vulnerabilities.

Authenticated remote code execution and DoS in Cisco Small Business RV series routers due to improper input validation; no patch available.

Vulnerability

The web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers contains multiple vulnerabilities due to improper validation of user-supplied input [1]. These affect all firmware versions; no fixed version has been released. The interface is accessible via LAN or WAN if remote management is enabled (disabled by default) [1].

Exploitation

An attacker must have valid administrator credentials for the affected device. They can then send crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface to trigger the vulnerabilities [1]. No additional user interaction is required beyond authentication.

Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition [1]. This gives full control over the router.

Mitigation

Cisco has not released software updates that address these vulnerabilities, and there are no workarounds [1]. As a precaution, disable remote management if not needed and restrict LAN access to trusted users only.
