CVE-2018-0351

CVE-2018-0351

Description

A vulnerability in the command-line tcpdump utility in the Cisco SD-WAN Solution could allow an authenticated, local attacker to inject arbitrary commands that are executed with root privileges. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the device and submitting crafted input to the tcpdump utility. The attacker must be authenticated to access the tcpdump utility. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute commands with root privileges. This vulnerability affects the following Cisco products if they are running a release of the Cisco SD-WAN Solution prior to Release 18.3.0: vBond Orchestrator Software, vEdge 100 Series Routers, vEdge 1000 Series Routers, vEdge 2000 Series Routers, vEdge 5000 Series Routers, vEdge Cloud Router Platform, vManage Network Management Software, vSmart Controller Software. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvi69751.

AI Insight

LLM-synthesized narrative grounded in this CVE's description and references.

Authenticated local command injection in Cisco SD-WAN tcpdump utility allows root-level arbitrary command execution; fixed in Release 18.3.0.

Vulnerability

The vulnerability exists in the command-line tcpdump utility of Cisco SD-WAN Solution products (vBond Orchestrator, vEdge routers, vManage, vSmart) running software prior to Release 18.3.0. Insufficient input validation allows an authenticated local attacker to inject arbitrary commands that are executed with root privileges. [1]

Exploitation

An attacker must have local authentication to the device and access to the tcpdump utility. By submitting crafted input to the tcpdump command, the attacker can inject arbitrary commands. No user interaction beyond authentication is required. [1]

Impact

Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges, leading to full compromise of the affected device. This includes potential for data exfiltration, further lateral movement, and disruption of SD-WAN operations. [1]

Mitigation

Cisco has released free software updates to address this vulnerability. The fix is included in Cisco SD-WAN Solution Release 18.3.0 and later. Customers should upgrade to a fixed release. No workarounds are mentioned in the advisory. [1]
